"Only one thing doesn't change / Only one thing stays the same / All I know at the end of the day is your love remains…" These are words to a song called "The One Thing" by Paul Colman. As I was traveling back from Westminster this afternoon, this song played on the local Christian Radio Station - 95.1 WRBS. Because of the things going on around me in the last week, the words of the song touched me and I was moved to raise my voice with Paul's.
What do you do when times get tough? Are you prepared? Read the words of King David, a prayer from Psalm 86: "Bend down, O LORD, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help. Protect me, for I am devoted to you. Save me, for I serve you and trust you. You are my God. Be merciful, O Lord, for I am calling on you constantly. Give me happiness, O Lord, for my life depends on you. O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask your aid. Listen closely to my prayer, O LORD; hear my urgent cry. I will call to you whenever trouble strikes, and you will answer me." Psalm 86:1-7 In the above excerpt David set a good example for tough times: he recognized that he needed help, he knew who he could trust, he took the time to pray. Very importantly, did you notice that David prepared himself for trouble by serving and trusting the Lord ahead of time? He had already established a relationship with God and when tough times fell, he urgently cried out and called constantly on the One whom He already knew. I like a variety of music: country (sometimes), 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s pop & rock, certain classical pieces, movie soundtracks - I even like new age! A person like me can swing back and forth between a number of radio stations if so desired. But there's one thing the Christian station has that most others don't. As my daughter says, they play "Jesus song"s. Almost every song on the radio is somehow connected to God. It's a great spot in which to find yourself when you're in difficult times because it usually doesn't take long to hear 'the right' song: one that touches your heart, your soul, your situation. Because I'm in the habit of listening to the Christian radio stations, it's possible for me to find help there when I need it. If I'm always listening to the best of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, then I have songs like, "Car Wash," "Don't You (Forget About Me)" and "Last Dance" to help me. These secular songs may lift my spirits, but they don't usually remind me of the One who really supports me, who really helps. Do you spend time with the Lord reading His word, praying to Him, talking about Him, or singing to Him? These things help you establish and strengthen your relationship with God. They also set you up for success when tough times come. God says, "Don't You (Forget About Me)"! This Week at Wesley...
